Repurposed Frame into Chalk Board

I found this frame at a yard sale last weekend.  Frame really doesn't accurately describe it though does it.  It's super fancy.  I mentioned in my last post it was my favorite find.  It was a steal.  It was in perfect shape with lots of cool details.  It's big it's almost four feet wide.  It looks like it used to hold a mirror.

Here's the before, almost forgot to take a picture I was so excited to paint it. It was a dark chocolate brown the perfect base color.

I decided to use Old Violet Annie Sloan Chalk Paint that I won last year.  I haven't had much luck with this color but I wanted to try again.  It really is a pretty color.  Reminds me of Blueberries.  With the dark chocolate showing through I really love it.

It's the dark wax that makes it come alive.  That is the problem I had with the dresser I used this color on previously, I didn't use dark wax and it fell flat.

A reader asked me recently what wax I use but I couldn't answer them because they were a no reply comment blogger so I'll answer here.  I have been using Minwax Paste Wax which I really like.  The thing I like most is it drys super fast and you can buff it after about 20 minutes.   On whites though it changes the color since it is not clear.  Recently I decided to try Annie Sloan's wax and I really like it too.  I haven't used it enough yet to really review it.  I love how creamy it is but the first time I tried it I used way too much and had to buff alot.  It takes a lot longer to dry than Minwax but the finish it gives is lovely.

I decided to make the frame into a chalk board but if someone wanted that could be removed and a mirror easily added.  Wouldn't this look pretty as a mirror over a fireplace?  Or as a head board if you added an upholstered panel in the middle.  I think it's such a cool find.  I will be bringing this to Abundance Vintage in Centralia WA in August to sell.  It's gonna look great in my window display.
