5 upholstery Workroom Setups I Use Every Day (and Wouldn’t Want to Give Up)

Running an upholstery workroom is a constant evolution. I’m always tweaking, rearranging, and problem-solving to make the space work better for the way I actually upholster. Over time, a few setups have become total non-negotiables for me—small changes that make a big difference in how smoothly the day goes. These are five workroom solutions I use all the time and would absolutely set up again.

1. Hanging Dacron from the Ceiling with a pulley system

Managing bulky materials like Dacron can quickly take over valuable floor space. I’ve tried a few different ways to hang it from my ceiling but finally settled on using a bicycle pulley system. This allows Dacron to be stored overhead while still being easy to access and change out. This setup keeps material clean, off the floor, and ready to pull down as needed—saving space and reducing frustration. My table is 60 inches wide, and I hang the roll in the center, which still allows full access to the table. Even though my ceiling is only 8 feet high and I’m 5'4", this setup still works well for me. Because it’s on a pulley system, I can easily raise or lower it—and take it down completely if it ever gets in the way.

2. A Retractable Extension Cord Above the Worktable

If you’ve ever tripped over a power cord or dragged a dusty one across a piece you just upholstered, you know why this matters. Having a retractable extension cord mounted above my main table keeps cords off the floor and right where I need them. Foam cutter, steamer, whatever—I pull it down, use it, and let it retract. No tangles, no hazards and it’ll reach every corner of the room.

3. Removable Fabric Roll Holders That Attach to the Table

Cutting, inspecting and rolling out fabric is so much easier when the roll is supported properly. Especially when you are handling a lot of yardage. These DIY removable holders attach directly to my worktable, letting fabric unroll smoothly without wrinkling or touching the floor. When I’m done cutting, they come off and the table goes back to normal. Perfect for a workroom where every surface has to earn its keep.

4. Pop-Up Table Extensions for Extra Space When I Need It

Some days you need a ton of table space, and other days you really don’t. Pop-up table extensions give me the best of both worlds. I can flip them up when I’m working on larger pieces or matching patterns, then fold them away to keep the room open. It’s one of my favorite ways to make a small space more flexible.

5. An Adjustable Height Swivel Worktable

This one is all about comfort and efficiency. Being able to adjust the table height saves my back and shoulders, and the swivel feature means I can rotate the piece instead of walking around it. It might sound like a small thing, but over a long workday in a small space it adds up.

I modified a salon chair by adding a Plywood square to the top.  Another option for adjustable height would be purchasing a dog grooming table. Just Attach a larger plywood top and you're in business. I haven’t purchased but here’s a link to give you a visual.
