I picked up this hutch a few weeks ago and just knew I wanted to paint it blue. Aubusson Blue Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to be exact. I love the lines of this piece and with the fretwork & fancy legs I thought I would just paint it clean, no chipping and just hint of distressing on the edges.
When I finished painting and distressing it was pretty but it just didn't seem done. I should know myself by now I rarely paint anything clean. I left it for a week to think about it.
The next week I taught a paint class featuring Milk Paint and so I picked up some Miss Mustard Seed White Wax for the class to play with. Loved it. I just happened to be using blue as a sample color and when I tried the white wax over it I just knew I had to try it on my hutch.
To apply the white wax I used a chip brush to get it into all the details.
Then I used a rag to wipe away the excess. Just like you would with a glaze.
If I took too much off I just added more. If too much remained after wiping away I used some of MMS furniture wax to help remove it. Miss Mustard Seeds White Wax is so creamy that it is really very easy to use and very forgiving. I have mixed my own white wax before using different brands of wax and didn't really like the results. I found them to be thick and hard to work with.
After the coat of white wax dried I went over everything again with furniture wax. The White Wax comes in a small container and I used about a quarter of a container on this piece.
Before
After
I love the way the White Wax brings out all the details and it was so much easier then painting all that with a tiny artists brush. I'm hooked.

WOW - love the look! I haven't tried any furniture painting yet...the hubby is a "wood freak" and has a fit every time I suggest it...I think I will have to be a closet painter...and not show him until its done - LOL

looks fantastic. i haven't had a chance to pick up the white wax yet but this makes me want to get my butt in gear
hmmm I just use paint to get this effect. The wax is a cool idea - thanks for sharing!
Haha Cheryl, I used to have to be a closet painter too. He always liked it when he got home. Of course I'd never paint any of his family heirlooms but everything else is up for grabs ;)-
Yep you can use paint or glaze for this look. Since I was using wax to finish it off the White Wax worked very well with it and gives subtle depth that is lovely. I think it's easier to work with then paint with it's creamy consistancy ;) Just another fun tool in the toolbox.
That is absolutely gorgeous!! Haven't tried the white wax yet...thanks so much for the great TUT and awesome pics! Fun fun!!
It looks great! I definitely want to try the white wax!

This is very cool! I paint funky furniture in bright colors, but have been playing with the chalk paints, and wondering what product is used to get the effect you have achieved. It is gorgeous. Love the look on the legs! Great blog, and great instructions! Thanks for posting this.
It looks beautiful! It may be my monitor but the color looks so much lighter than Aubusson Blue. Does the white wax really lighten it that much?
Just Gorgeous.
I love this piece! The white wax is exactly what it needed. Need to try it.
