Oak Fluorescent Light Cover Re-Purposed into a Shelf

So the other day in my travels I scored an old Oak Fluorescent Light Cover for a few bucks. It didn't have any of the light parts just the frame. I immediately thought shelf. I loved how thick and chunky the frame is.

I cut three shelves to size and used my router and router table to make a grove in them for plates.

I attached the shelves with glue and nails using my nail gun. I also added a 1 x 2 to the top to support the mounting hardware.

Then added 1/4" plywood to the back with glue and nails.

I painted it with two coats of Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in the color Kitchen Scale. It is such a pretty color. I've sorta played it out though I think this is my fifth piece I've done in it. I only put one coat on the back because the plywood had a nice grain to it and just wanted it to look like a wash.

I sealed the paint with MMS Hemp Oil. It leaves a really nice sheen and protects the paint. I didn't use wax because its so slick once it cures and well you know plates and all.

I love how the white plates pop off of this color. It was a quick little project. Funny when I searched google images for a before photo I saw what they charge for those oak lights and well maybe I should have tried to sell the cover on eBay or something. Geez they don't give those things away. Oh well, I like it better like this. Have a great week!
