Mimi vs the Dresser

Help me please.   This little dresser is killing me.  I picked it up over a month ago because it was inexpensive, solid wood and I figured I could do something with it, no problem.

Except I cant stand it.  It started with me thinking hmm I have this can of Old Violet ASCP that I won a while back that I haven't used yet.  I will just paint it with that.

That didn't do it.  So I distressed it.

Still not right.  I went searching for ideas.  Enter the 1st, 2nd, 3rd.  I hand painted those babies on there.

Still NO. That trim with the leaf design was throwing me off...

Why not dry brush a little Old White on it to highlight it's awesomeness.

Um NO.  This thing keeps getting worse and worse.

So basically I have learned a very important lesson:

Sorry little dresser I'm just not that into you.  Thank goodness I just finished waxing a piece I do love and restored my faith in myself.

I think at this point I should donate it and cut my losses.  What would you do?

What if you painted it with white chalk paint and did some awesome detailing on the knobs? Like tole painted flowers? Sort of Anthro-ish, but not colorful? Detailing in black? Or.....I know..

Do the same as this.http://missmustardseed.com/2012/05/say-hello-to-mustard-seed/ well, same detailing idea, but you might have to cover the flower detailing it has.. I don't know, those are my first thoughts :)

I like the size and lines of the dresser, but I don't like the leaf design. I would put a piece of simple trim over the top of the leaf design to eliminate it. I like the color you used on it, but have you thought of putting a darker stain over the top of it? or stripping the top and staining it? I like the numbers you painted on it. And maybe changing out the knobs? It's a good start but I agree that something isn't exactly right.

Good luck!

Hi Mimi,
Well colour me crazy but I love it....I wouldn't do a thing to it!

What if you did some type of stain on the top to contrast the base (that's kind of my go-to painting technique when I don't know what to do). Only problem is taking the time to strip the top and then if you don't love it, you've spent a lot of time on it. Just thinking out loud here! :)

I like the stain over the top idea and some dark knobs. I don't think it is a total loss. I do think it is a cute style. I like it's height and chunkiness.

The Miss Mustard Seed idea is a nice one. I follow you both and find that your styles sometimes coincide with each other. It's definitely NOT a total loss with your talent. I like the detailing that Miss Mustard Seed did, fun knobs and your Violet color. Remember "It'll be okay in the end, if it's not, then it's not the end!" GO FOR IT!

Well, if I lived close to you, I'd sure take it off your hands. I love it!

I love the color. I would paint over the 1st, 2nd and 3rd with the violet, add crystal knobs and get some decorative wood trim pieces (near the moldings and such at Home Depot) and add those where the numbers were. All of these touches would play on the femininity of the color you chose. Those are my thoughts . . . I can't wait to see what you do decide to do with it. It's not a loss :-) It's a cute dresser and you were right to buy it! XO Laura at www.theironstonenest.com

I think covering up the trim is the key here. you could create a thin faux drawer and just slap it right on top :) or just fill in with paintable putty and sand. Repaint is a must i feel. I like the stenciling on the miss mustard piece. cute cute cute. don't give up it's an adorable piece. soo much potential

Donate it and cut your losses. I tell young girls at the thrift store with their grandparents all the time "If you don't love it don't buy it".

Paint it all white and wax/antique it so the details will pop
Paint it white and leave the drawers the color it is and then antique it as I think it would be great 2 tones.

I think it's a sweet little dresser. The Old Violet is a pretty color. I hadn't seen it on a piece, yet. If it were me, I'd cover the numbers, dark wax it all over and change out the knobs. It has potential as a keeper.

I think it's lovely - especially the colour but I do think the Nester has good suggestions. Don't donate it! It will definitely sell. J

Maybe add some legs to the bottom - or change out the knobs - take out a drawer and make it into a shelf instead?
