Old School Stereo Cabinet Redo

This cabinet resides in my craft room.  I first posted about my new craft room here. This is the other side of that room, part of the original cabin.  I don't think I ever mentioned that our home has been in my husbands family for many years did I? This old school stereo cabinet was here when I came along in storage.  Nobody wanted it.  It obviously wasn't going to be used for its original purpose anymore.  I could have gotten rid of it or give her new life.  I liked the curvy lines.  I just knew I could do something with her.

I did this pre-blog so I don’t have any before pictures.  This is the closest thing I could find on the Internet.
You've all seen these babies right?  The one in the above photo is a lot nicer than mine but the lines are similar.  It had the mesh in the front that hid the speakers and a sliding top that revealed the record player.  I pretty much ripped all the guts out and built a box inside.

Originally I didn't put doors on it.  I just had the supports in there.  It held my husbands equipment manuals and books when this room was the "Man room".  One day while staring at this cabinet thinking it needed some doors I remembered I had some and amazingly they fit perfectly.  Dontcha just love it when that happens?  Well the height was perfect but I did have to take out those middle support pieces and move them out a few inches.  No biggy.  I found a few of these doors at the Habitat Restore.  They must of been sample doors because they were all different finishes.  They were $1 each so I picked them up without knowing what I was going to use them for.  It looks soooo much better with doors.

When I change over this room to my craft room I added the baskets.  They are from Wal-Mart and I made the liner from some apple green napkins I got for a gift.  The tray on the top shelf I got on clearance at Target.  It works perfectly to transport my laptop to the couch in the other room.  Above the credenza you might notice my JOY bunting.  I got the idea from Miss Mustard Seed at Christmas but I like it so much it’s staying all year. It's no sew made from canvas and a stencil. I made the stencil like I did here.

So you are wondering what's up with that deer head?  My husband doesn't hunt he fishes but he loves the thing.  It's just always been here.  He is not even sure who put it there.  For him it reminds him of growing up visiting his Grand Parents and I just can't mess with that. It just occurred to me that it's strange he (the deer) doesn't have a name. Hmmm, it seems to late to name him now though doesn't it?
I just realized I never finished distressing the doors.  the rest of the cabinet was painted, lightly sanded and given the stain treatment. Oops, the thing is far from perfect but it was so fun to do.  Like many of you out there I would rather re purpose an old piece of furniture any day then by new.  So much more rewarding!  Even if I never do quite finish it. ;)
Thanks for visiting my craft room!
